Carnival CALABAR 2009:Memories!

Bayside Band Junior Queen

The city of Calabar stood still on the 26th and 27th of December 2009 for the long awaited Carnival CALABAR!. The drums were rolled out as the city went agog, spectators both local and international converged on the carnival route to be a part of African’s biggest street party. The Carnival train departed from the Millennium Park through the 12KM Carnival route(being Calabar Road- Mary Slessor Avenue-Marian Road-MCC Road-Murtala Mohammed Highway –the U.J Esuene Stadium).

The Carnival with theme, Land of our Birth:  Our people , our Culture, featured the Children’s Carnival on the 26th of December while the main Carnival was for the first time on Sunday , commencing at 3.00 p.m. and culminating in the Carnival after party.

The Participating bands were; the Freedom band-with their distinctive yellow colour, the Master Blaster Band- displaying their flamboyant orange colour ,Seagulls Band- with their Red hot colour, Bayside Band-flaunted their aqua marine colour , while Passion 4- flaunted their green colour, showcasing the agrarian potentials of the state.
The new bands on the train Apache Aliens and Diaspora band, displayed dexterity in their dance skills, though their costumes were not as classic as other bands, but their choreography was at its best. Other non -competing bands at the event were new bands the Immigration Band, Civil Defense Band, and the Fire Service Band, the Lions Club band and the Rhapsody Band.

Passion 4 Junior queen

The 2009 Carnival, had lots of surprises, with Seagulls Band and the Passion 4 band, having a tie to win the first prize of the Carnival.
