Obudu Mountain Race 2010:Who will conquer the mountains?

Contestants on the move!

Come 27th November 2010, Obudu will host the world once again in the 6th Edition of the Obudu Mountain race and the 2nd African Nations Mountain Running Championship. Acclaimed the highest paying mountain race in the world, the two races will hold simultaneously on Saturday, November 27th 2010, featuring activities like Doping in Sports seminar, Media Race, Children’s Race and a Gala Night/Fireworks aside the main race.

The Obudu Mountain Race covers a distance of 11 kilometres uphill, to an altitude of 1,765 metres above sea level, taking you to one of the finest destinations in the world, the Obudu Mountain Resort.  The Race is the highest paying Mountain Race in the world, with star prize of $50,000 for both men and women.  The star prize for the African Nation’s Mountain Running Championship is $15,000 for both men and women teams.

The  2009 edition of the Obudu Mountain Race was won by Ethiopian Habtamu Fikadu Awash with a time of 42:03 minutes.  Gregory Kusuro of Uganda came second with a time of 42:11 minutes while Kenyan Macdonald Ondara took the 3rd position in 42:14 minutes in a highly competitive male race. In the female category, Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska came Ist  beating her compatriots Mestawet Tufa and Meselech Melkamu Hileyesus to 2nd and 3rd respectively.  The defending champions for both male and female, Ethiopians, Habtamu Fikadu Awash and Mamitu Daska will be on hand to defend their titles among a very strong international field.

Facts: The Obudu Mountain Resort is one of the finest tourist destinations Nigeria  offers the world.  Deep in the tropical rain forest of Cross River State, Obudu and the Ranch present an enchanting scenery of 22 and breathtaking U-bends. With a temperate climate in the tropics with temperatures between 80C and 210C all year round is equipped with modern facilities like an International Hotel, and airstrip, a 9-hole golf course, nature reserve, 5 lane/70 m long slide Water Park and is equipped with a 4.2km long Cable Car(longest in Africa) and a 70m long canopy walkway suspended above the forest floor (longest in West Africa) . The resort is about 40 minutes away by air from both Calabar and Abuja.  While the road journey from Calabar is approximately 4.30 minutes , the road journey from Abuja is about 5-hours.

The serenity and ambiance of Cross River State was brought to the fore at the Rise National Youth Forum, Calabar Edition. According to Mr Oronto Douglas, Senior Special Assistant on Research, Documentation and Strategy to President Goodluck Jonathan, “I have travelled in almost all the local government areas of this state and I must confess that the topography of this state is amazing with unique climatic conditions” Mr Douglas was one of the keynote speakers at Calabar edition of the  Rise National Youth Forum, held at the New Arts Theatre of the University of Calabar Saturday, the 13th of November 2010.

The event which drew the attendance of over 3000 youths proved that Calabar is not just a city of fun lovers but the young here have a passion and drive to acquire knowledge for national development; so much so that Toyosi Akerele, Convener RISE acclaimed “Besides the Lagos event, the Calabar event is the best in attendance and quality of questions and feedback by participants”

The event also featured seminar presentations by Iquo Ukoh, Oronto  Douglas and Toyosi Akerele.  Iquo Ukoh , the first and only female Director of Nestle Nigeria PLC, spoke on Entrepreneurship and the road map for school to work transition. Sharing her over 30 years of corporate experience with participants. “You have the luxury of your parents home now, by the time to graduate you would be thoroughly irritating them” -Iquo Ukoh, admonishing young people to plan their future by going into entrepreneurship.

Mr Oronto Douglas spoke on the topic; A framework for National Youth Transformation; youth at the centre stage. He called on young people to be interested in the affairs of the Nation by contributing their quota to its development. “The Rebuilding of Nigeria is not just the responsibility of the government alone, but its begins with you and I” – Oronto Douglas

Toyosi Akerele, convener of RISE charged young people in her speech to think differently organize differently and act differently for the attainment of the Nigeria of our dreams. She young people to be build themselves that leadership starts now. Relating her experiences in setting up RISE to participants, she charged young people to prepare themselves, by being knowledgeable in what they choose to do because “opportunity meets preparation, not luck”

Contestants at CCQ 2009 Season!

Introduced in the  2007 with the aim of producing an ambassador for tourism in Cross River state; as well as the face for Mothers against Child Abandonment (MACA), an initiative of Her Excellency, the Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Obioma Liyel Imoke;  the Carnival Calabar Queen Pageant (CCQ)  competition is an annual pageant that causes a “fashion traffic” in Calabar every December.

The competition which is open to young women aged 18 and 27, has so far  produced three magnificent queens, Miss Chineye Uwanaka winner 2007/8, and Miss Queeneth Orok, winner 2008/9 2009 and the reigning Miss Mayen Ekpo, Winner 2009/10.

The lucky winner takes home not just the crown, but mouth watering prizes such as 2 million Naira and a brand new car worth up to 4 Million, and other goodies!

Carnival Calabar:What’s your band?

The Calabar  Carnival is a spectacular splendor to behold,ranging from  the colours, costumes and dexterity in choreography skills  of different  bands add up to justify the uniqueness of this great tourism innovation  coming from Cross River State. The challenge is not deciding to join a band, but the difficulty becomes the question of choice.  if you are you still indifferent about joining a band or haven’t made that choice yet, read on and get a clue!

Bayside Band

The Bayside band is one of the five competing bands that features yearly at the Carnival Calabar. Identified by it’s distinctive aqua marine colour, baysiders believe; the sky is blue, the ocean is blue that’s why we are blue”. The band membership is open to all Nigerians and foreigners, with three categories of membership which includes full, Honorary and Junior membership. Bayside band was the winner of the 2007 edition of Carnival Calabar and is led by His Excellency, Donald Duke, Former Governor of Cross River State.

The Master Blaster band is a socially vibrant band and among one of the biggest bands in the state, it prides itself as comprising the hip, bold and beautiful. The band which has 20 troupes with sectional leaders is identified by its vibrant ORANGE colour. The band is working towards winning the first place at this year’s carnival and is actively mobilizing members from all over the world to accomplish this. The master Blaster band is led by Mr Gershom Bassey and Sen. Liyel Imoke, the governor of Cross River State.

Seagulls Band

The seagulls band a.k a. The “Celebrity band” is a cynosure of the eyes at the carnival because it features Nollywood stars, as its honorary members. With its traditional RED colour, the band express beauty with a large participation of nollywood stars like Rita Dominic,Patience Ozokwu( Mama G ),Ramsey Noah and others. Membership of the band is open to all people of colour who are ready  to ” paint the town red”  and its led by a woman of passion: in the person of Senator Florence Ita-Giwa. The Seagulls Band for the first time had a tie with the Passion 4 band to win the 1st prize of the 2009 edition of the Carnival.

Freedom band

Freedom Band Senior King "Stepping out"

Distinguished by its vibrant yellow colour, the freedom band emerged based on our history of negritude which connotes “black emancipation” .It prides itself as a band “that owns the sun” without which the world would not be habitable! With a section of 10 troupes, the creativity of the freedom is always a spectacle to behold as its colour is manipulated to create a rainbow out of other colours. The freedom is led by Capt. Henry Brisibe.

Passion 4 Band

Arival of Passion4 1st Crew!

With a significantly large youth population, passion 4 has distinguished itself as the “band with a record” winning the prize of the Carnival in the year 2005,2006, 2008 and in 2009,it won first place in a tie with the Seagulls band.  The band with the highest number of medals. Led by Mr. Chris Agibe,the passion 4 band is one of the most energetic bands in the Calabar Carnival, a.k.a the “Agbani” band, P4 is one of the most competitive bands in terms of membership; with an extremely selective process, members are chosen based on body build characteristics!
