Sequel to  a documentary on her Mothers’ Against Child Abandonment (MACA) initiative, The Wife of the Cross River State Governor, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke,  explained that the Calabar Carnival Queen Pageant (CCQ), was introduced in 2007 as part of the Calabar Festival, not only to select a face of tourism but also as a spokesperson for MACA. She added that the pageant is also a platform to raise funds for the care of abandoned babies and vulnerable teenage pregnant girls.

Speaking further, Mrs. Liyel-Imoke in an emotion laden voice decried the spate of abandoned babies in the state and pleaded that people who found themselves in such position shouldn’t throw away their babies to die but should take them to the “The Refuge Home” for care.

According to her, most of the people who do this are usually teenagers who fall victims of rape, incest and promiscuity largely as a result of a breakdown in the family structure.   “It is not good to dump a child in the dustbin to die or kick a pregnant girl out of the house, if you kick her out she will dump the child. Some of them have been raped and abused. Two wrongs don’t make a right, use the facility provided by MACA project, as those perpetrating the act would be prosecuted by the Child Rights Law ”. Mrs. Liyel-Imoke said.

The initiator of MACA, however, was optimistic to see that these babies and the vulnerable ones realize their potentials, experience proper home environment with proper foster parents. She disclosed that so far over 100 abandoned babies have passed through the “Refuge Home” and about 60 housemates been catered for at The Refuge Home for teenage pregnant girls at risk, adding that the Senator Liyel Imoke lead administration is providing purposeful leadership to make sure Cross River State is Fit for every child and thanked him for being supportive of her programmes. She equally expressed her appreciation to all who have donated to her projects.

The occasion was witnessed by the former Governor, Mr. Donald Duke and his wife, the Deputy Governor Barr. Efiok Cobham and his wife, Senator Florence Ita Giwa,  Members of the House of Representative and House of Assembly. Other top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, corporate bodies and tourists among others.
